Instructions

As discussed in the unit lesson, resolving conflict in the workplace requires using interpersonal skills, management skills, and techniques. Interpersonal skills can consist of understanding individual differences, self-esteem, self-confidence, communication, teamwork skills, problem-solving skills, cultural relations skills, motivation skills, customer service skills, ethical behavior skills, and stress management skills. Management skills focus on the type of management skill applied such as collaborating, accommodating, forcing, avoiding, and compromising. As a member of the workforce, you must be able to effectively resolve conflict, either with the use of interpersonal skills, management skills, or by applying the recommended ways of responding to tension in the workplace (e.g., overcoming defensiveness, accepting of the tension, and resolving the tension).

For your Unit VI Assignment, please reflect on your knowledge of resolving conflict that you have experienced or observed in the workplace. Please analyze what you have learned. Describe how your learned knowledge can be used. Also, identify how this information can be used to resolve conflict in the workplace in your current job or from a past incident you have experienced. What steps/methods were used in resolving the conflict?

The Greeks valued truth and our theatre tradition is about seeking the truth in a play’s content and in its performance. One of the most popular plays in the ancient Greek theatre was Oedipus Rex (or Oedipus the King) by Sophocles.

Watch the following brief summary and analysis of the play and then answer the question that follows by posting to this discussion board.

In your post share with us the following:

Name a play, movie or episode of a TV show that revealed a truth in a really assaulting or graphic manner.
Think of Oedipus Rex. What is the truth of the play, movie, or episode and how did the graphic nature of the presentation impact you?

Course Conclusions And Reflections

Course Conclusions And Reflections

For our final discussion of the term, we will have a class-wide discussion of the following 3 discussion prompts.  Please feel free to answer honestly; you will not be penalized in any way for your frankness, for the 3rd prompt or any part of this discussion (keeping it respectful of everyone, of course!)

  1. A few years after graduation, you find yourself at a work-related social event, chatting with a very important person who happens to love Japan.  Why, you think Japan is interesting too!   And you happened to have taken a class in college on Classical Japanese Literature!   As you begin to talk about your mutual interest, 1) what is the name and author of the work you (hopefully) remember and like the most, and 2) what would you say, in 2 or 3 sentences that the work is about, and 3) why we still value it even 1000 years after it was composed?

2.       A few days after the event described above in which you deeply impressed the important person with your insights about Classical Japanese literature and culture, you are now known to your co-workers (sarcastically) and bosses (admiringly) as the “expert on Japan.”  Someone asks you if it is true that in Japan slurping noodles is considered polite.  Pretending to be called away on an important call, you covertly check the internet to confirm or deny the noodle slurping rumor.  How can you tell if the internet sites you are reading are reliable and trustworthy (in other words, rigorous!) in their info about Japan or not?  The CEO is traveling to Japan next week and urgently wants reliable advice (or else!)

3.    A friend asks if he/she should take this course. Would you recommend it? What would you say students need to do if they want to do well in the course?

Overview
Each and every one of us struggles with writing at some time or another. Some of us have trouble writing a sympathy note. Others have trouble writing evaluation letters when we are in supervisory positions. Whatever our individual struggles are it is helpful to identify the specific struggles. We may not be able to turn the struggles into advantages but identifying them will let us know where we need to spend our energy.

This is the first of four discussion boards (DB) in the course. Each of the four DBs will have a specific focus and instructions. The format will remain the same. Each person will write about a specific topic and post it. Each person will then read the posts of two (2) peers and respond to them.  More specific instructions for DB #1 follow.

Instructions

For the initial post:

Note
  • The length of this discussion is to be 250-300 words.
  • Two (2) references are required for the initial DB post. You may use your textbook as a reference, but it does not count towards the minimum required references. References for Discussion Boards must also adhere to the APA Manual 7th edition formatting.
