You are a registered nurse (RN) working in a Women’s OB/GYN Clinic. Elizabeth Jones, 37 years old, presents to the prenatal clinic after missing her last 2 menstrual cycles. Her home pregnancy test was positive. An ultrasound at the clinic confirms pregnancy. Gestational age is calculated to be 10 weeks.   • (+) tobacco, “occasional” per client (pt), <5 per/day currently, has smoked “off and on” for 15 years
  • (+) cocaine use, states she has not used any cocaine/drugs for > 1 year; (-) alcohol use
  • Abusive partner with first pregnancy, states she has a new partner x 4 years
  • Depression, currently not taking meds for treatment (tx)

Medications: Prenatal vitamins; Labetalol 200mg BID;

Family history: Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (mother); HTN and heart disease (father); breast cancer (maternal grandmother, deceased)

  1. What should the nurse consider related to caring for a client with a history of domestic abuse, drug use, sexually transmitted diseases and depression?

Imagine one day you hear a knock on your door. You open the door and there stands Morgan Freeman with two doctors. Freeman appears very ill and the doctors explain why they are there: as it turns out, Freeman lives down the street from you (who knew!) and has a rare life-threating illness. He needs an immediate plasma transfusion and will need the same donor to donate their plasma to him for the next year in order to stay alive and eventually recover. The doctors tell you that plasma transfusions can be extremely painful and will leave the plasma donor bed ridden for several days after each plasma donation. After asking you a few simple questions, the doctors determine that you are an exact match and are ready to perform the first of many transfusions right then and there. If you decline, Freeman will die within an hour.

What would you do in this scenario? Take on the burden of keeping Freeman alive for a year as the ultimate Good Samaritan? If so, why? Or decline and not take on the burden? If so, why? If you decline to help Freeman, do you think you would be killing him or merely letting him die?

You have been hired by a large law enforcement agency to analyze the images used on advertising billboards in both urban and suburban regions. The billboards visually display a new campaign message to improve neighborhood safety.

During your analysis, you find that the images used on billboards in the urban areas are exactly the same as the images used in the suburban areas. Both images show parents happily talking with law enforcement officers while children run over green lawns having a fun balloon fight. You decide that these images are not sending proper perceptual messages. You decide to create a visual analysis video for the law enforcement agency to share with the administration.

For the video visual analysis, you realize you will need to find two new images that are quite different from one another. One image will be used on the urban billboard, and the other image will be used on the suburban billboard. In your video presentation, you will compare and contrast how each image utilizes the following:

  1. Compare and contrast the visual elements of cultural familiarity. Explain why it is important to use culturally familiar visuals that are quite different in the urban and suburban billboard images. Include specific visuals in your visual analysis.
  2. Identify specific visual examples of the following cognitive elements: memories, experiences, and expectation. Compare and contrast how urban and suburban viewers may be affected differently by those specific cognitive visual elements.
  3. Explain the difference between urban and suburban viewers’ emotionally engagement with each of the billboard images.
