diabetic medications

The media examples I have chosen to discuss are regarding diabetic medications that air on television commercials or online ads. As a nurse who works with the chronically ill and elderly population, I get quite a few phone calls with questions or requests regarding medication seen through advertisements. My patients will usually tell me they saw something on tv, usually know the name and that “it said it’s for diabetes” and then request a script from their provider. A lot of times the requests are for medications in pill form, not often do I get a specific request for a specific injectable diabetes medication or insulin.

The first diabetic medication in discussion is Trulicity. The commercial does clearly state that this medication is for Type 2 diabetics and it aids in lowering blood sugars as well as assisting with weight loss. At the end of the commercial, the narrator (very quickly) runs through a myriad of side effects and potential adverse reactions. The commercial concludes with saying the patient should speak with their provider for further information if Trulicity may be right for them. This is an example of a commercial that is run on television. I have found that it is mostly the older population that watches local television where these types of commercials can be seen. The younger generation tends to be more often on streaming services or differing internet platforms.

cultural diversity

I ;

think the information given is fairly effective in reaching differing patient populations with age, cultural diversity or educational background differences.

have had some elderly patients call me to say they saw a commercial for “a new medicine and it starts with a T.” More than once I’ve had to play detective and try and figure out what medication they are talking about, gather information from them, look at their chart and current medications and then if appropriate, go to the provider and request the medication for the patient.

believe the information put out there via this type of media is mostly successful in reaching the intended audience.

The second diabetic medication in discussion is Jardiance. The commercial clearly states that Jardiance is used in patients with Type 2 diabetes and also has cardiovascular effects in that it may lower the risk of heart attacks or stroke. At the end of the commercial, again, side effects and adverse reactions are stated. This commercial also concludes with saying the patient should speak with the health care provider for more information or to find out of Jardiance is right for them. This commercial is also run on television but like the first ad on Trulicity, it is also run online through various applications such as YouTube. I believe the information given is effective in reaching differing patient populations with age, cultural diversity and educational background differences. I also believe the information put out there via this type of media is mostly successful in reaching the intended audience.

Media is very useful in teaching content to students. It allows for variety and gives students that chance to learn the content through different methods. The first type of media that we will look at is print material . This can be the textbook, articles, journals, handouts, etc. This type of media is effective because students are able to take their time and learn at their own pace. Students are also able to highlight, take notes and look at the text as they study. This type of media is only good for students that know how to read and are able to comprehend what the printed material is saying. Printed material should also be in a language that the student understands and at a level that is appropriate for their age.

type of media

The second type of media that we will look at is visual media. This can be in the form of a picture ,charts, PowerPoints, virtual reality, and 3-D models. The effectiveness of this type of media is that it can reach a wider range of learners. Learners are able to create a different type of connection with visual learning that allows students to retain the information better. (Winarto et al., 2020) While visual media can be helpful for many learners it tends to need some kind of verbal or written explanation, which can decrease the usefulness of this tool in teaching.

The third type of media that we will look at is audio-visual. For many learners audio-visual is very common in their study practices. Films and short videos are the two common forms of audio-visual media that is used. This type of media is able to hold many learners’ attention, is easy to access and allows for a wide range of learners to learn at the same time. While this media is very useful for large groups it can be costly for schools due to copyright laws and depending on where the lessons are taking place the access to these videos can become difficult.
