Ethics

Ethics

Option 1. Do you identify more with Kant’s deontology or Bentham’s Utilitarianism from Chapter 5?  Is intention more important than consequences? Give an example of a difficult decision you made that you feel was the morally right decision. Was your decision based on intention, on consequences, or on a combination of both?

Option 2. Refer to Box 6.3 on page 254 in your textbook. Consider the idea that rationality creates good decisions. Identify a decision you made that could have used more reason (logic) to arrive at a good or moral decision or identify a decision that you made rationally that could have used more emotion.

Directions:

Your initial post should be a minimum of 250 words and should adequately answer the following asked. You should then respond to two classmates by elaborating on something said, giving clarification, or asking a question. Each response post should be between 25-50 words.  Your initial post is worth 15 points, and each response post is worth 5 points. See the Syllabus for the grading criteria.

second question

. You may use your textbook or any other course content without citations. However, if you use info. from outside the course (online or print), please complete an MLA citation for each source used. Your chapter summary should be a minimum of 2 pages (MLA format).

In a journal format, answer or elaborate on the following:

1. Overview of Utilitarianism: In your own words, explain what you understand about utilitarianism. If someone asked you what you studied in this chapter, what could you tell that person? What is still confusing to you?

2. Overview of Kant’s Deontology: In your own words, explain what you understand about Kant’s ethical theories. If someone asked you what you studied in this chapter, what could you tell that person? What is still confusing to you?

3. Philosophers: Compare and contrast Immanuel Kant’s and Jeremy Bentham’s theories. What is the main difference between them? Are there any similarities?

4. Reflection: Which theory do you like more–one that focuses on consequences or one that focuses on intent? Which do you think makes for a more moral society?

5. Clarification: Is there any concept that just does not make sense to you or that needs clarification?

SPLASH

SPLASH

As a nursing leader you have been asked to assess the mission/vision statement of an organization. Choose a Mission/Vision statement and create a PowerPoint presentation identifying components of the chosen Mission/Vision statement that clearly drive patient care and components that are cloudy or ambiguous.

Provide alternate statements that clarify the Mission/Vision statement for quality healthcare delivery and ensure the Mission/Vision statement is disambiguous.

Literature

Literature

Look carefully at the quotation that appears above. Virtually every literary character in Moore, Dante, Homer, Virgil, Sophocles, Marlowe, and Shakespeare who we will read about together, cannot stay on a diet or steadfastly refuses to embark upon one in the first place. Select a temptation (in one of these texts) that threatens to irrevocably mess things up for our hero. What is the temptation? Why does the hero or storyteller give in (they always do)? Are the events depicted timeless or do we still see evidence of these occurrences today?

Select one of the texts and focus upon it and authors who write critically about it (and the author). There are a few ways to approach this study. Imagine yourself as a psychologist or a psychiatrist or a counselor. How would you ‘treat” the hero? Can he/she see that he/she is making mistakes? Does he or she have a mentor? Would others deal with these circumstances differently?

How to do Philosophy

How to do Philosophy

Bring comments and questions about “How to do Philosophy” to this discussion board. An original post is due on Wed. and two replies are due on Friday. Posts should be 200 words, though I’m not as particular about length as I am about engagement with the material. While I want to see that you are thinking about the material, don’t feel that you have to show mastery of it. Discussion beyond the basic requirements for full credit is highly encouraged. Do follow the discussion boards through the week. This is where we want to explore and work out questions and points you aren’t totally clear on. The more of a conversation we can have here, the better. Return to the board often through the week and watch for my occasional replies to student posts generally, not just your own. Here are some review questions form the chapter to get our conversation going:

  1. How does dialectic differ from debate?
  2. What is it for a claim to be true? How does this issue differ from that of determining whether a claim is true?
  3. Explain our everyday concept of truth in terms of correspondence.
  4. What is an argument? How do we evaluate arguments?
  5. What does it mean for the premises of an argument to support its conclusion, and what are the two standards of support?
  6. Explain the surprise principle and illustrate its use in evaluating an inference to the best explanation.
  7. What is a fallacy?

Note

  1. Learn about a fallacy or two on The Fallacy Files(Links to an external site.) and report back.

Your answer should be sufficiently detailed to prove or demonstrate that your identification of the passages is correct

Part b)
Using the tools for identifying parts of arguments in Units 1 and 2, analyze the arguments by bracketing and labelling the premises and conclusions in the passage. Your explanation should be sufficiently detailed to prove or demonstrate that your identification of the argument is correct

Part c)
Write one or two paragraphs (250–300 words) summarizing and analysing how the argument(s) in the follow passage are logically supported, drawing specifically on the methods demonstrated in Unit 2, Part 2. Specify the premises, conclusions, and how they relate to each other. Use indicator words to demonstrate relationships between the premises and the conclusion(s).
