Human Resources at McKinsey

Human Resources at McKinsey

Topic 4:

You have been hired as special consultant to the director of Human Resources at McKinsey (or some other firm that hires many business students).

  1. Based on the principles of mental accounting, how should McKinsey structure their compensation package to maximize the number of offers accepted (recruiting)? Of course, we are not looking for the following answer: “Increase salaries.” Assume that the  total compensation is fixed (including the cost of benefits).
  2. How should McKinsey structure compensation to retain employees? Again, take total compensation to be fixed.  HINT: How does mental accounting suggest different compensation packages might be required for recruiting and retention?

reflective journal

reflective journal

Students are required to submit weekly reflective narratives throughout the course that will culminate in a final, course-long reflective journal due in Topic 10. The narratives help students integrate leadership and inquiry into current practice.

This reflection journal also allows students to outline what they have discovered about their professional practice, personal strengths and weaknesses, and additional resources that could be introduced in a given situation to influence optimal outcomes. Each week students should also explain how they met a course competency or course objective(s).

In each week’s entry, students should reflect on the personal knowledge and skills gained throughout the course. Journal entries should address one or more of the areas stated below.  In the Topic 10 graded submission, each of the areas below should be addressed as part of the summary submission.

  1. New practice approaches
  2. Inter professional collaboration
  3. Health care delivery and clinical systems
  4. Ethical considerations in health care
  5. Practices of culturally sensitive care
  6. Ensuring the integrity of human dignity in the care of all patients
  7. Population health concerns
  8. The role of technology in improving health care outcomes
  9. Health policy
  10. Leadership and economic models
  11. Health disparities

Social workers

Social workers

One of the many reasons social workers conduct needs assessment is to provide support for new programs. Social workers have many methods available to collect necessary data for a needs assessment.

Social workers can use existing data from a wide range of sources, including local and national reports by government and nonprofit agencies, as well as computerized mapping resources. Social workers can gather new data through interviews and surveys with individuals and focus groups. This data can provide the evidence that supports the need for the program.

To prepare for, review the needs assessment plans that you and your classmates generated for this week’s Discussion. Also, review the logic models that you created in Week 7 and any literature on needs of caregivers that you used to generate them. Consider the following to stimulate your thinking:

  • Getting information about the needs of the target population:
    • Who would informants be?
    • What is your purpose for interacting with them?
    • What questions would you ask?
    • What method would you use (interview, focus group, questionnaire)?
  • Finding potential clients:
    • Who would informants be?
    • What is your purpose for interacting with them?
    • What questions would you ask?
    • What method would you use?
  • Interacting with the target population:
    • Who would informants be?
    • What is your purpose for interacting with them?
    • What questions would you ask?
    • What method would you use?

Submit  2- to 3-pages outlining a hypothetical needs assessment related to the support group program for caregivers. Include the following:

  • The resources needed to operate this service
  • The program activities
  • The desired outcomes
  • A plan for gathering information about the population served
  • Justifications for your plans and decisions
  • A one-paragraph conclusion describing how you might conduct a follow-up to the needs assessment at the implementation stage of the program evaluation

Measuring capacitance

Measuring capacitance

Lab 8 –

Capacitors are useful circuit elements because they can store charge.  For a capacitor, there is a fundamental relationship between the applied voltage and the amount of charge stored on the capacitor.  In this experiment you will measure the charge on a capacitor versus the applied voltage for several values of the applied voltage.  A plot of charge vs. applied voltage should form a straight line with a slope equal to the capacitance.

(1)You will use this relation to measure the capacitance of capacitors with different areas and distances between plates. Then you will verify the relation below using these different values.

(2)objectives

MATERIALS

Computer w/ internet access
Logger Pro or Excel

PRELIMINARY Set up (done in lab)

Do the following in your groups, then return to class to discuss to make sure you know how to use site:

  1. Go to the following website:

https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/capacitor-lab-basics

  1. Open the capacitor only screen.
  2. Play with the controls until you are familiar with how they work. Make sure you can use the voltmeter to measure the potential difference between the plates.

PROCEDURE

You will measure the capacitance for each capacitor using the following protocol. Note that the theoretical value is given to you at the top of the screen—-your fit of your data should agree with this value.

  1. Set the distance and area to the required values.
  2. Position voltmeter to measure potential difference.
  3. Repeat the following until you have at least 7 points, starting at 0 and going up in steps of 0.2 V.
  4. a) Set the battery voltage to required value.
  5. b) record voltage and charge in first data table.
  6. When complete, use Excel or LoggerPro to plot a graph between Q (Y axis) and V (X axis) and do linear curve fitting and determine slope. The slope is C (Cs). Remember to use SI units when plotting! Include all plots with fits in lab report.
  7. You will repeat the above for three values of A and d. These values will be given to you by your professor. When you complete this task, fill out the second data table.
  8. You will also calculate value of C (Cc) from equation 2.
  9. Find percent error between three values of C as shown in the table 2.

DATA TABLEs

Add rows and columns as needed:

3

 ANALYSIS

  1. You have already plotted the Q vs. V and determined the slopes. This is the first part of the analysis. Put these slopes in column 4 of data table 2.
  2. For the second part of the analysis, use Eq. (2) and the data in columns 2 and 3 in data table 2 to calculate the capacitance for each capacitor geometry you measured. Put these values in column 5 of data table 2.
  3. You will compare the results of C in columns 4 and 5, 4 and 6 in your lab report.
