Financial institutions

Your niece just started her college career with a major in economics. She is curious as to the interrelationship between the success of an economy and the financial markets, concepts, and financial institutions. Accordingly, she has developed a list of questions addressing these issues and has asked that you explain the ideas.

• What are the financial markets and what purposes do they serve?
• What are financial intermediaries? How do these intermediaries function in the economy?
• What is a federal government budget deficit? What is the national debt? How does a budget deficit affect the economy?

She is also curious about the time value of money concepts. Specifically, she has the following questions about these concepts:

• Why are consumers considered to be risk averse? What methods could be used to deal with risk?
• It has been said that a dollar received today is worth more than a dollar received tomorrow. What does this mean and what is the significance to the economy?
• What is the difference between the present value of a future sum of money and the future value of a present sum of money? What is the significance of these concepts to economics?
• If you deposited $1,000 in an account paying 6% interest compounded annually, how long would it take to double?

Deliverables:

• Prepare a 5-6 page Microsoft Word document that addresses the above-noted concerns and meets APA standards.
• Include a summary section in your report that contains 5-7 bullet points identifying your major findings or conclusions of your paper. 

 PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT

CASE PREMIUM PAPER (50%)

        Company “Premium Paper” is located near Paris. The design and print paper for           furniture applications (usually called melamine paper). Production process consists on printing raw paper. Raw paper is delivered in big rolls (700 Kgs). Production process is done in multi-stage printing machines. Each stage of the machine contains an engraved cylinder and ink. Paper runs on the different stages and the combination of all of them provides the final printed paper.
Set up times in these machines are very long (3/4 hours). This means that every time the process is stopped because of any technical issue, the costs can be enormous.
Premium paper has 6 printing lines (3 “Stoner” Machines , 2 “Rotomec” Machines and  1 “Grimaldi” Machine  (the oldest one)

Premium Paper has a highly experienced maintenance team. Every time a machine suffers a breakdown they run and try to fix it as soon as possible. However due to some unexpected failures and lack of spare parts, “Premium Paper” is suffering very serious productivity problems.

• How should you define the maintenance process?
• Which changes should you implement in terms of maintenance?
• Which recommendations should you address to the Top Management with respect the machines park?

To prepare for the  Assessment, choose a well-known corporation, such as Samsung, Starbucks, Ford Motor Company, or Waste Management, that implemented a major change. Analyze the corporation’s change process based on Kotter’s 8-Step to Change using the Organizational Change Chart.

Python Course Capstone

Description

Python and the database tool SQLite, you will develop a functionally project of your choice from the Capstone Project List. You will begin with an approach/strategy statement of the project, use the topics covered in class and document your code using comments inline to the code. And most of all, have fun building a project!

Capstone Project List

You will choose a project from the following list. Include which project you’re working on in your strategy statement.

Airline / Hotel Reservation System – Create a reservation system which books airline seats or hotel rooms (one or the other, doesn’t not need to be both). It charges various rates for particular sections of the plane or hotel. Example, first class is going to cost more than coach. Hotel rooms have penthouse suites which cost more. Keep track of when rooms will be available and can be scheduled.

Company Manager – Create a hierarchy of classes – abstract class Employee and subclasses HourlyEmployee, SalariedEmployee, Manager and Executive. Every one’s pay is calculated differently, research a bit about it. After you’ve established an employee hierarchy, create a Company class that allows you to manage the employees. You should be able to hire, fire and raise employees.

Patient / Doctor Scheduler – Create a patient class and a doctor class. Have a doctor that can handle multiple patients and setup a scheduling program where a doctor can only handle 16 patients during an 8 hr. work day.

Recipe Creator and Manager – Create a recipe class with ingredients and a put them in a recipe manager program that organizes them into categories like deserts, main courses or by ingredients like chicken, beef, soups, pies etc.

Flower Shop Ordering To Go – Create a flower shop application which deals in flower objects and use those flower objects in a bouquet object which can then be sold. Keep track of the number of objects and when you may need to order more.

Family Tree Creator – Create a class called Person which will have a name, when they were born and when (and if) they died. Allow the user to create these Person classes and put them into a family tree structure. Print out the tree to the screen.

Quiz Maker – Make an application which takes various questions from a database, picked randomly, and puts together a quiz for students. Each quiz can be different and then reads a key to grade the quizzes.

Boat Rental – Create a boat rental application which holds boat inventory, rental prices, boat availability, reservations and customer booking information.

The expectation for this project is you create your own project. You may use the DBbase class code we’ve used in HW9 and previous assignments. Code from previous assignments may be used as guidance only. Do not copy components from HW9 and submit as your own work, this will result in a low-end score.
